The incredible invitation of sweet oak coupled with vanilla and strawberry jam are impossible to give into. Wow! Than the smoother then expected fruit vigorously pours itself across your tongue to completely fills the mouth. Wait no longer as the surprising dryness of this wine takes over when the tannins make a prominent appearance. Aging this wine will be difficult for the weak willed. This wine says “Old World” from the get go with its musty earthiness and the oak embarked smokiness. Its mild fruit is well rounded and reveals itself early and extends well through the mid pallet followed by obvious, well balanced mellow tannin structure and finish. This old vine Carignane (1942 vines planted in rich loamy soils) has become the flagship wine of Grands Amis’ old world tradition. It has been aged for 27 months in various aged French Oak Barrels. Awards: Best of Class Lodi Appellation 2007 California State Fair & Tri-Medal Lodi International Wine Awards. This Petite Sirah is probably the biggest of its class around. With a nose reminiscent of leather and chocolate this wine appears to be very modest, until it reaches your mouth. With a complex taste of dark chocolate covered dried cherries, it will awake all your senses! Big tannins are well integrated with the French Oak. This wine has been aged for 27 months in assorted oak barrels. Alcohol by volume: 15.5%, Total production: 184 cases

• 2007 Grands Amis Première Passion

Awards: Bronze Medal 2009 California State Fair. This Bordeaux style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Verdot and Merlot brings out the old world of Lodi. This blend has a typical early nose of cassis fruit and is herbal in nature. The mid-pallet complexity of mild blackberry and essence of eucalyptus and mint are appreciated but fleeting. The aftertaste is more Cabernet-driven – dark chocolate malt. Well balanced acidity and the good structure of oak tannins will make this a keeper and would probably show more potential if you have the patience to keep it. It has been aged for 16 months in various aged French, Hungarian and American Oak Barrels. Alcohol by volume: 13.9%, Total production: 153 cases

Awaking your mouth with intense yet smooth, approachable fresh blueberry fruit, all of the character is surrounded and captured by lingering peppery tannins. Aged 15 months in 80% French Oak & 20% American Oak. 60% were new barrels and 40% 2nd & 3rd fill.

With the 3% Viognier addition, the nose is more inviting with some pineapple and pear along with grapefruit, moving into a smooth introduction in the mouth, finishing clean with crisp citrus notes and a tiny bit of grapefruit zest, all of which is encompassed in a light non obtrusive package. Only 87 cases and dwindling quickly. 13.3% alcohol

• 2007 Grands Amis Old Vine Zinfandel

Awards: Bronze Medal 2009 California State Fair. Aged mainly in second fill American oak with a touch of French oak aged Petit Verdot this Zinfandel is typical of Lodi with ripe plum, moderate pepper and tannins perceivable but not aggressive. It's food friendly yet sipping is not a problem at 13.9% alcohol. 109 cases
